Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) have established themselves as storage technology for e-mobility due to numerous advantages. The performance of these battery systems is significantly influenced by temperature. Low temperatures lead to a loss of performance and can trigger degradation processes (ageing) that reduce the service life. Efficient cooling concepts are in demand. Especially for critical operating scenarios such as fast charging, a powerful system is necessary to compensate for heat release. This tempering of the battery induces gradients and inhomogeneous temperature distributions within the cells or in the battery pack. The temperature distributions in turn influence the local electrical cell behaviour and can thus also potentially have a negative impact on the performance and ageing of battery systems. This creates a complex interplay between the electrical-thermal behaviour of the battery cells and the external temperature control application in the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>For the design of efficient thermal management systems, it is therefore not only crucial to have a sound understanding of battery behaviour, but also of the effect of different temperature control options on the temperature distribution in the battery system. With the help of this understanding, optimisations can be made to the thermal cell and pack design and an improvement in the performance and service life of the battery system can be achieved.
