Lithium-ion battery cell as a critical component for e-mobility and energy storage, has made significant progress since its born. Cell format has evolved over time into three major categories, cylindrical, pouch, prismatic and/or blade. Each format holds its own advantages & disadvantages and excels for its specific applications. Understanding the evolution as well as the latest development in China will help mitigate development risk and drive new innovative solutions in Europe.
The purpose of this work is to support the global cell industry by creating a clearer picture of cell format overtime as well as uncovering some latest development. With a combination of technical and market analysis, the work intends to promote right decision making for business executives, technical leaders, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders on the value chain.

The initial part of our research focuses on the evolution and progression of cell formats, tracing back their journey since the 1990s. This historical review not only chronicles the advancement of these cell formats but also connects their arise with notable legacy electric automobile models that have played a role in shaping the industry. In order to offer a more in-depth understanding of the technological underpinnings, we’ll introduce a detailed technical analysis. This will encompass aspects such as directly comparing the capacity of newly introduced cell formats with their predecessors, shedding light on the rationale and technological advancements that prompted the shift and evolution over time.

The second part of the work focus on some of the latest cell products announced in Asia market and support the global community in understanding them and reaching to its own right conclusion about future trends. By providing a thorough exploration and analysis of these innovations, our intention is to offer valuable insights and clarity to the global community. This will enable stakeholders, researchers, and engineers alike to understand and discuss potential implications of these products. With this knowledge, we hope to facilitate the global audience in formulating informed opinions and arriving at well-grounded conclusions regarding the anticipated trends and trajectories the industry might follow in the upcoming years.
